Looking in the mirror can save your marriage!

Looking in the mirror helps us see the ‘real’ us. Until we look closely at our own hearts, we cannot expect ‘real’ change in our marriages. It is scary, difficult and often the largest challenge you will ever face……looking deep into a mirror.

If I am a Christian, pursuing my faith, going to church, praying and truly walking with the Lord, then WHY is my marriage a mess? Ever wonder where God is in all this? If all these things are true, Christianity, bible reading, and church going etc., then why is my marriage and family a big mess? Is God even working in my life?

 James 3: 13-18

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from   wisdom.  14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.  15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

We can allow heavenly wisdom to shape our lives by following three simple tactics.

Tactic One: Identify Godly Wisdom

First we need to identify Godly wisdom in our lives. Verse 13 tells us that we can tell by looking at two areas if we are walking in Godly wisdom. The first is by looking at our “good” life. A good life represented in our parenting, our marriage, our relationships, our finances and a good life of serving others. The next area we can see if we have Godly wisdom is in our humble deeds. Deeds we do not brag about or get credit for. Including our humble deeds of serving our parents, visiting the sick or those in the nursing home, visiting those in prison, etc., Are we humbly giving, worshiping and are we humbling ourselves in our leading, our ability to repent and forgive others?

Tactic Two: Identify Earthly/Demonic Wisdom

We must be able to identify if we are being influenced by demonic wisdom. Verses 14, 15 and 16 show us we are displaying evil, selfish or demonic wisdom if we are harboring bitterness, envy and selfish ambition in our hearts, we must not boast about it or deny the truth; there we will find disorder and every kind of evil practice. Are we in denial? If so, we are the hardest people to help when we will not acknowledge our own sin. Do we brag about what we have accomplished and ourselves?

Tactic Three: Identify Your Steps to Godly Wisdom

We must identify our steps to pursue Godly Wisdom. Verse 17 tells us 17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness. First we must pursue pure wisdom. Godly wisdom is pure motives are not selfish. We must pursue peace by our temper being kind and careful in our marriage, in our home, in our work and in our church. We must always be considerate, submissive to the Holy Spirit and be cooperative with people. We must be merciful especially when others fail us. We must also be impartial and sincere.

Dare to be Different

There it is. Crystal clear. If these items are present in our lives, we have PROOF that Godly wisdom is in us and flowing through us. Scripture tells us to put off the old and put on the new. You have to know what Godly Wisdom looks like and what does Earthy Wisdom look like and then determine what steps to take to be Wise in the Lord. Pray for Godly wisdom to begin flowing through you in all areas of your life leading to HUGE BLESSINGS. So many Christians’ lives are battered with earthy/demonic wisdom. We need to repent and turn to Godly choices, Godly behavior, and Godly wisdom. My prayer today is that you do exactly that, choose to be peaceful, considerate, submissive, merciful and impartial then Godly wisdom will create a new marriage, a new work place, a new family and a new life. Now go and be different for Jesus Christ!
